What You Can do Everyday to Prevent Tooth Decay

There are many different tactics and processes that someone can take to help in preventing tooth decay and keep the best oral health. While gum disease along with tooth decay is the leading dental diseases among both adults and children, it is important to have the right practices in place in your daily routine.

Ways to prevent tooth decay

One of the best steps a person can take to prevent decay is to brush their teeth twice per day. Although this step in preventing tooth decay is easy, it is also just as easy to put off this practice every now and then. It should never be ignored, and it should be done every single day.

Flossing is just as important

Although a person brushing their teeth twice a day is excellent to promote the best oral health, many people forget to floss. This step in someones daily dental routine is just as important. By skipping this step, food particles can stay stuck in hard to reach areas and begin forming plaque that can lead to cavities and tooth decay.

Whenever possible, skip eating sugar

When it comes to sugary and starchy foods, avoiding these can be one of the best things someone can do for their teeth. When sugary foods are eaten, it reacts with the bacteria in a person's mouth to form an acid that is detrimental to their teeth.

The best way of preventing this is by simply skipping the sugary foods and opting for something healthy.

Use mouthwash and fluoride toothpaste

If someone is looking to have an added boost to their oral hygiene routine, rinsing the teeth and mouth with an anti-bacterial mouthwash can be highly beneficial.

Along with mouthwash, if someone adds the use of fluoride toothpaste it will greatly help in boosting the teeth enamel and help in preventing and combatting tooth decay.

Brushing your tongue can help

When someone brushes their tongue this can get rid of many of the bacteria that are staying and harboring in someone's mouth. Either using the tongue scraper that is included on many toothbrushes, or buying a tongue scraper at your local pharmacy will do!

Pay attention to your gums

If someone notices that their gums are beginning to look swollen or inflamed, it is important to take note. If there is any blood present when brushing, this should be relayed to your dentist. Never ignore any aches or pains, and consult a dentist as soon as possible. These pains could be an indicator of a larger issue forming.
