Are Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments Painful?

Cosmetic dentistry offers patients a way to fix problems that they have with their teeth. This restores their smiles and improving their self-confidence. Despite the benefits of cosmetic dentistry, some people avoid getting treatment because they are worried about the procedures being painful.

Do cosmetic dentistry procedures hurt?

Despite the fears some people have about undergoing treatment, cosmetic dentistry procedures do not hurt. Technology allows dentists to now use less invasive techniques during treatment. This also allows the patient to retain as much of their natural teeth as possible and reduces the level of discomfort they feel during treatments.

In fact, most of the cosmetic treatments offered by dentists are minimally invasive and do not require surgery.

Types of cosmetic dentistry procedures

Some of the different treatment options offered by cosmetic dentists include:

Teeth Whitening

This is one of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures. It is used to improve the appearance of yellow or stained teeth. The procedure can be done at the dentist’s office. A bleaching agent is applied to the surface of the patient’s teeth until the teeth reach the desired whiteness.

The procedure is done in one visit and is also painless.

Dental veneers

These are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the surface of the teeth to hide imperfections like crooked teeth, crowded teeth, broken or chipped teeth, gap teeth and even yellow or stained teeth. The veneers have to be bonded to the surface of the teeth. That means the dentist has to file off part of the affected tooth before the veneers can be bonded to the tooth.

Even though the filing does not hurt, it can lead to sensitivity in the tooth for up to 48 hours.

Dental crowns

These are caps that are used to improve the appearance of teeth, protect damaged teeth and prevent infection. In cosmetic dentistry, they are mainly used to improve the appearance of teeth, which are filed so the crowns can fit properly. In other cases, dental crowns are used to restore teeth that have been damaged because of decay or infection, which usually requires a root canal to fix. If the patient has to undergo a root canal, there will be some pain associated with the procedure, but the dentist will prescribe painkillers to be used until the pain subsides.

Even though root canals have a reputation for being painful, most patients who have undergone the procedure compare the pain level to the amount of pain associated with getting a dental filling, which is not much.

For the cosmetic dentistry procedures that require surgery, the dentist will numb the affected area before starting the procedure. That way the patient does not feel any pain while the dentist is operating. For those who have a fear of going to the dentist, some cosmetic dentists also practice sedation dentistry. They can provide sedation to patients to relax them before they begin treatment.

Conclusion

Cosmetic dentistry procedures can be scary for people who believe they are painful. However, most of the procedures are minimally invasive. Thus, they are not considered to be painful.

If you want to undergo a cosmetic dentistry procedure and are worried about the pain, talk to your dentist to get more information about the procedure. Also, find out if they offer sedation to calm you down.
